Death: the consequence of your marital status
Death is the most unpleasent thing to talk about! But It can trigger also the most hideous effect of the marital status
Marital Status in absense of will can make it a lot more painful for your loved one if you don't live with same marital status as the law will tell you are!

In Quebec without a will(Testament) when you live in common law if your partner dies you have NOTHING!
Without it all goes according to the Civil code to the family and the common law
partner is not consider a family member
What to Do?
Each partner should write their will. it can be a hand writen will or with a
notaries. The first one cost more when you deces but nothing now. The second
cost less if done once but more if you need to change it often.
Separate, but not divorce
In absence of will. it's usually your mariage contract or the civil code that will give to your ex mostly all.
Why?
Because for the law you are married and the nearest family member is your ex!

Easy write a will!
Tax: they want your good and they will have it
Tax consider you "married" after 1 year in Canada. This is very different from the usual 3 years they applied for mostly all other rules.
